Caprionline is an operator specializing in the online sale of tourist services in Capri, the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples. Through a network of seven web portals, Caprionline offers people from all over the world the opportunity to make their Italian holiday unique by pre-booking activities of many different types: from boat tours to culinary experiences, from textile workshops to sunset photo shoots.
Leaders in the area
Founded in the 1990s as a web agency for hotels and tourist activities on the island of Capri, Caprionline later devoted itself to the development of vertical portals for neighboring tourist areas, until it acquired a leading role in the area. The annual figures speak for themselves: more than 5.2 million visitors, 40,000 bookings, 700 tours and bookable services.
A new era
In 2022 Caprionline starts the project of developing a new proprietary technology platform based on Symfony, Doctrine, Next.js, React and Tailwind CSS.
The company decides it is time to take action on the design of its portals as well. The goal is to achieve a revamped style and a more consistent user experience, to allow users to navigate more smoothly from portal to portal and the Caprionline team to minimize front-end maintenance efforts and costs.
In mid-May 2023 we were contacted by Nello Iaccarino, the founder of Caprionline. There is an immediate understanding between our teams, and at the end of the summer season we start working together with them.
Kick off with a workshop
Our designers and the Caprionline team gathered in Milan to open the work with a Co-design Workshop. We start each new digital product creation or redesign project this way. Here is the agenda we have prepared for this occasion.
Understanding:
- Company: history, business, clients
- Project: context and goals, technical and design constraints
- Competitive landscape: competitors, brands and relevant products
Design:
- Demo of portals by the Caprionline team
- UX mapping with User Story Mapping
- Identification of key UX issues
- Definition and discussion of key UX improvement opportunities
- Definition and discussion of key new service design opportunities
- Definition of next steps
Redesign, done Agile
We reorganized the information gathered in the workshop and started a design process with an Agile approach, organizing the work in sprints of two weeks each.
In three months we created a Design System destined to change the face of Capri.com, Positano.com and the other portals of Caprionline. We started by revamping key design elements, such as the style of typography and color palette of the brand family. Then we designed user interface components such as buttons, modals, forms, and menus.
We redesigned the overall browsing experience within the portals, paying special attention to more complex pages and flows that are more impactful to the business, such as the main navigation flow, search for activities using filters, and the checkout process.
Design, develop, repeat
While we were still designing, having real-time access to our design on Figma Caprionline developers began applying the new Design System to the portals. This made it possible to accelerate the release of the first front-end update on the technology platform already in production.
Meanwhile, other developers on the team continue to work on the new back-end platform, which will be released in 2025. Then the front-end will be updated again with additional improvements and new features we are working on.
«With Moze we work using Agile methodology, and that makes all the difference. This is the same approach we already had in our team: sharing it with a technical partner allowed us to achieve concrete results quickly, right from the first weeks of collaboration. They supported and advised us directly with great effectiveness, bringing online the redesign of our portals in record time and creating new features.»
Alessandro Astarita
Tech Lead, CaprionlineExpanding the offering: a new service in the network
While helping Caprionline renew the core of its business with the redesign of its seven portals, we also worked with their team on defining new concepts for digital services with which to expand the network’s offerings.
The first result of this creative process will be BluBlu, a web service that will bring together key information and ferry schedules for local travel around Capri, throughout the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples. Through BluBlu, tourists and residents will be able to plan and book all their maritime travel through a single platform.
Leveraging the variables of Figma, one of the latest features of the powerful designer software, we created an alternative color theme for BluBlu within the main Caprionline Design System.
«The experience with Moze was revitalizing: they helped us evolve our portals, giving us new insights and creating a solid UX and design that reflects our values. They also guided us in defining a roadmap for new service development, highlighting our business priorities. We are now looking forward to the first release and then resume designing with them.»
