Matesub is a project born in 2020 within Translated, an Italian scaleup in the translation sector. We are Translated’s partner for UX & UI Design and front-end development of their digital products, including the Translated.com platform, tools for translators and ModernMT.
In 2021, we again joined forces with Translated, which is determined to bring innovation to the process of creating and translating subtitles, to create Matesub, a new tool that takes advantage of the latest Artificial Intelligence technologies in speech recognition and machine translation.
Matesub allows the user to upload a movie in any format. The software detects the spoken text and automatically generates subtitles in the chosen language. Through a powerful, professional WYSIWYG editor, users can make changes and export their work in the most suitable formats.
Design
Based on the insights gained from the User Research conducted by the Translated team, we designed the user interface of the software. The design challenge was to design a simple and usable interface despite the many functionalities available to the user.
Front-end development
We contributed to the realisation of the front-end software, using React and Redux to manage the complexities linked to the mutability of the state of the application through the multiple interactions with the interface and, in particular, through the temporal representation of the video track (timeline). The front-end application communicates with the back-end layer mainly through an information stream transmitted via WebSocket (such as, for example, the text of subtitles which is automatically translated and made progressively available in the software). This paradigm allows real-time data transmission, which is particularly useful for the speed requirements of translation software.
Public launch
Matesub, after a period of private beta to gather feedback from early adopters, has been released publicly on matesub.com.
