Creating a Design System for enterprise software

Present in 14 countries with 30 plants, Serioplast produces rigid plastic packaging. Pushed by the high costs of external contractors, the company decided to stop buying software licences from market leaders and started the in-house development of a new ERP solution. To begin the project, Serioplast formed a new team and defined goals for the first three years.

Serioplast has chosen Moze to facilitate the kickoff of the new development team and to create their own Design System, the building blocks of the company’s software interfaces.
Working side by side, we helped the new team master the necessary know-how to design and develop their own software.

Fast-forwarding with a Design Sprint

We started the project with a Design Sprint. Invented in Google Ventures, this methodology makes the most of the team’s creativity to create a prototype of the new product and test it with potential users in just 5 days.

Starting with a Design Sprint helped us develop a first concept of the software suite as well as quickly show the team the basics of human centered, iterative design.

Understanding where to begin

Starting from the concept developed during the Design Sprint and analysing the company structure, we co-designed the suite’s information architecture working with managers and other staff members from Serioplast. Looking at the architecture, we drafted a first roadmap and defined potential incremental releases.

Defining an effective process

Serioplast wanted to enable their new software team to produce better solutions with a high impact and actually improve the work of 1,600 people around the globe.

We suggested to start the development of each new software by mapping the experience of its future users inside the company. Each company’s team has been involved into quick workshop sessions where they would describe their work in detail, pointing out problems and potential opportunities of improvement.

Starting from the real experience of users helped us focus our efforts towards the elements of higher value for the employees and the business, reducing the risk of going wrong.

Design System: a language to design and build

In order to make Serioplast’s in-house team automonous in the development of many different solutions, we designed a tailor-made Design System – a library of interface elements.

To do that we chose Atomic Design, an approach described by Bred Frost in a book with the same title. This methodology divides the elements of an interface into atoms, molecules, organisms, templates and pages. This helps establish a coherent style among the different softwares and makes usability as well as development more scalable.

Release strategy

Our work with Serioplast ended with the definition of a release strategy, aimed at fulfilling the needs of a small set of users inside the company. For the first release, we suggested them to focus on a limited set of features (MVP, Minimum Viable Product).

At the end of our collaboration, the Serioplast team has been able to continue designing and developing their software autonomously, thanks to the know-how gained during our journey together.
